Turmoil at the Pentagon: Why Democrats will "take the head" of Defense Secretary Hegseth if they win the midterms

Turmoil at the Pentagon: Why Democrats will

War crime investigations, "Signalgate," and the war in Iran threat US Defense Secretary with impeachment

If for United States President Donald Trump the November 2026 midterm elections represent a gamble he must win even marginally to advance his political program, someone in his administration has literally lost his sleep. Democratic lawmakers in the US have already initiated planning for investigations they will unleash immediately following the midterm elections against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, whose tenure at the Pentagon is accompanied by a chain of severe scandals. According to revelations, Democratic officials are in contact with potential whistleblowers and former Hegseth allies. Their objective, capitalizing on their likely majority in the House of Representatives, is to issue subpoenas for figures in his inner circle to establish an impeachment motion against him or force Donald Trump to dismiss him.

Political pressure escalates across all levels of Democratic leadership.

Likely next House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries made clear in a campaign speech that one of the first things they will do upon taking the majority is chase Pete Hegseth out of town

In the House Oversight Committee, Representative Melanie Stansbury emphasized that Hegseth's impeachment must constitute one of the top three priorities for 2027. Concurrently, the House Armed Services Committee is examining re-establishing the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee specifically to gather evidence surrounding decisions and operations of the Pentagon. Investigations are expected to focus on four major fronts burning the Defense Secretary. First, the notorious "Signalgate" and the leak of classified information. The incident involves March 2025, when The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was accidentally added to a group chat on the Signal application in which Hegseth discussed military operations in Yemen. Despite the Pentagon Inspector General's report concluding no crime was committed since the Secretary retains declassification authority, Democrats seek a paper trail to establish criminal liability.

Second, the war in Iran and the bypassing of Congress. Hegseth is accused of a total lack of preparation ahead of the conflict that broke out on February 28. Revelations indicate that Army Chief of Staff General Randy George had warned of dangerous shortages in air defense systems such as Patriot and THAAD. Hegseth ignored the warnings and fired the General in April. Concurrently, Representative Yassamin Ansari has already filed articles of impeachment against him for launching a war without congressional approval, while Republican Representative Thomas Massie moves on the same wavelength, introducing his own impeachment resolution and stressing that Trump must fire Hegseth to spare him impeachment.

Third, grave allegations regarding war crimes in the Caribbean. Revelations regarding military strikes against alleged narco-terrorists on drug transport vessels cause shock. In September 2025, Hegseth reportedly ordered a double strike on a vessel off the coast of Trinidad. Following the initial strike, while helpless survivors remained in the water, an order was issued for a second strike aiming to kill everyone. Military lawyers and members of Congress, such as Republican Senator Rand Paul, characterized these acts as extrajudicial killings and war crimes, as executing hors de combat opponents is strictly prohibited.

Fourth, internal suspicion and the collapse of trust within the military.

The atmosphere inside the Pentagon is described as explosive, as Hegseth has dismissed numerous senior officers, questioning their accountability and loyalty, leaving him completely isolated from military leadership

With the midterm elections approaching and Democrats emerging as favorites for House control, Pete Hegseth transforms into the Achilles' heel of the Trump administration. Coming months are considered critical, as mounting pressure may force the American President to choose between providing political cover for his Secretary or firing him to avoid a prolonged political stalemate.
